Your Life is a Pond Full of Scum

I was taking a walk through the city park the other day, and I came across this little lonely duck pond. For some reason, the mass of scum and bird shit that had accumulated on top of the water spoke to me. It said, “this is your life right now”. Ouch...well that’s not very nice, Mr. Pond. But I think I see the point you are trying to make here. Thanks for the kick in the ass, I’ll see ya later…

STAGNATION. One of my most despised words. Stagnation. Ugh. Yuck. It just sounds gross. I can almost smell it as I type these words. Disgusting. This right here...this is a big problem in life.

Our lives are a lot like water. Sometimes they flow, sometimes they swirl around, and sometimes, sadly, they just sit. And when they do...it’s not pretty. Is your life a pond full of scum and shit right now? When was the last time you circulated that water? Are you allowing this to happen? Are you allowing that water to just sit and rot? When was the last time your water was fresh? What kind of water do you like better?

This friends, is a HUGE thing to realize about your life. You were not given this life to just let it sit there and stagnate. CIRCULATION. YOU HAVE GOT TO KEEP CIRCULATING. Maybe not constantly. You don’t have to be the level 5 river rapids or a violent ocean, but, movement. You have GOT to have some movement to keep it fresh.

If you are at that point in life where you feel as if you are stagnate, or you have been sitting for too long, the answer is this. You have got to circulate. Are you tired of your job, your friends, your routine, your hobbies, your relationship? Do you feel as if you are going nowhere in life? Do you feel bad about your place in life? Does your life stink like that pond scum? Yeah, well, there’s a reason for that...

The answer is this, keep circulating. In every manner conceivable. The world is way too big of a place that is jam packed with constantly new activities, experiences, people, etc. You’ve got no excuse. CHANGE. We all need some measure of it. Sometimes it can be big, sometimes it can be small, but the fact remains. We all require this. Are you in a relationship that’s stagnating? Learn a new skill together, go somewhere new together...or...BREAK UP ALREADY! Is your career stagnating? Ask to learn additional facets of the business, seek a new position within the company...or...formulate an exit strategy and GTFO! You get the idea here….

I can’t tell you how many people I have come across in my life that are just plain out not happy. I have compassion for these people. I truly want to help. As I delve into deep conversations with them and try to understand the root of these feelings, 99% of the time it has got to do with some form of stagnation in at least one aspect of their lives.

This is a very simple concept but one that I feel goes over most of our heads. Part of maintaining happiness in life means MAINTAINING CHANGE. Changes bring happiness believe it or not. Maybe not always initially, but downstream (no pun intended) they WILL. Shake it up. Keep it fresh. Keep it movin’ already!

Don’t stagnate, circulate” - Mike
