Thinking V. Knowing What You Want

I've spent a lot of time these past few years really pondering some deep things about my life. I'd like to submit this thought to you today in hopes that it will jar your brain a little and at least make you take pause and contemplate a few things about your own life.

The thing I've been thinking about is, why do we want the things we want in our life? Like, what is the actual reason? Can you put a finger on in? Can you pinpoint it? Where do these desires come from? What's the deal here? What do I sincerely want in my life? Not somebody or some thing else? But...ME.

I had a startling observation about myself, and as I looked all around at my peers I couldn't help but wonder if they themselves were truly in touch with the "why" behind their desires as well. Sure, I really can't speak for anyone else, but I get the sense that a lot of people are guilty of this at one time or another.

The conclusion that I came to is that many of us think we want things because we see others around us having them. We see others doing things and we think, "well that must be what I'm supposed to be doing too." Or worse yet, we think we want things because it is what has been dictated to you. Your parents think you should do this, that or the other. Take this path and not that one. Your friends think you should date this person and not that person. You think you want this job because you think you have to be perceived by your peers in some sort of way, or you think you need some given sum of money, or any number of things that a career can bring you. You see all your friends buying a Tesla. You see all your friends getting married and having kids. At some point, you've convinced yourself. "Yup, now that's what I want right there." But...IS IT REALLY? Or were you acted upon by outside influences?? Are you deceiving your own self? What is going on here?

To get to the bottom of all this, I want you to dig really, really deep into your soul. I want to you to be sincere with the real you that exists beneath all the layers of the physical world. What about YOU? What do YOU really want in your life? Forget about everyone around you and all their inputs. Forget about "society" for a second. What do YOU want??? Can you think on those terms?

I want you to look back on your life up to this point and analyze all the things you have done. How many of those things were things that YOU and only YOU wanted? How many of them came about due to other factors? Now, of all those things you just thought of, how many of them panned out well for you, brought you joy and happiness, fulfillment, satisfaction? Interesting to contemplate, isn't it? I don't know about you, but looking back at my life in this way was really eye opening. It made me think, well...Ok, I see where my desires became contorted in the past. Some of those things really weren't what I wanted to begin with, and I did em anyways, and it didn't really make me happy. That sucks, but I can take this as a learning lesson, and try to translate this into my future...

So then, what is it that you really want? What do you want to do with your life moving forward?

It's my opinion that most people walking the Earth "think" they want something, but...they don't really want that. This makes sense, right? The brain is indeed in charge of "thinking". You've been conditioned to think a certain something your whole life. However, the soul, now that is the real compass. That's the thing you should really tune into to guide you. This is the furnace where your burning desires are born. Your soul doesn't care about the world all around you. The soul only cares about...well, you. That's it.

What is it that you want in your life? Forget about everything else. What do you want? Name it. Say it out loud. Repeat it.

Now, try to draw a distinction. This is the part I really want to stick with you...

What is it that you THINK you want? Versus, what is it that you KNOW you want?

Go after those things.
