The Motivation Barometer

We all experience periods of wavering motivation to do things in life. That, I believe is not always attributed to plain laziness, but something more. Something very important that I feel you should tune in to and perhaps alter your life based upon.

In my opinion, your motivation, or lack there of, is a direct reflection of your level of passion that you have for something. If you get up in the morning and have a dread to do something, this is a VERY big indicator that you no longer have the love for doing this act, whatever it might be. Think about it, if you truly enjoyed something with all your heart, you'd almost go to bed eager to wake up as early in the morning to get back to doing that thing, whatever it is. Like that feeling on Christmas Eve. You just could not wait to get up in the morning, you were so excited.

Now lets draw things apart a little bit here. No, I'm not talking about chores, or any other things that really NEED to get done in your life. It's obvious that you are probably always going to struggle with the motivation to do things like take out the garbage, go to get your blood drawn, or face a difficult conversation.

No I'm talking more about the things in our lives that we do generally have options on, and lots of them. Things such as our jobs, our hobbies, our relationships. These are the things that I am specifically talking about. If you plain out lack the continued motivation to participate in any one of these types of things, this is a barometer level for where your passions lie, and an indicator to you that maybe it's time to find something new to get motivated about. Or maybe you already are already motivated and just haven't taken action yet? Well it's time to really tune in and listen to your insides, and honestly, you probably should find a way to gravitate toward these things that you are motivated to do. In other words, these are the things that you SHOULD be doing with your life. Things that you will happily pour your soul into. You will be happier, and the world will be a better place should you take this general tack in life.

This place is one area where the ego tends to rear its ugly head. The ego prevents us from making changes. Often times the things that we had appreciable passions and motivations for earlier in our lives become a means of definition. We have our identities tied to those things. Everyone around us came to know us as XYZ, and very interestingly enough, this is the way we have come to know ourselves. It's very hard to shed our skin sometimes, but shed we must. Often times we hang on to things in our life as if we have something to prove. Some egoistic mindset that looks as these situations as meeting defeat? Or perhaps becoming something that is not "us"?

When you step back and look at this, the egoistic approach is ridiculous and self sabotaging at the end of the day. You've got nothing to prove to anybody. You follow your passions. You follow what your motivations are. You follow your own path in life and do the things that YOU WANT to do. Not the things your peers or your ego think you should do.

Look at the barometer in your life. Maybe it's time to follow some new passions? Maybe it's time to make some changes? Maybe it's time to really ask yourself...what am I motivated to do today? And then do those things.

You are allowed to change. You are allowed to evolve. You are allowed to explore an infinite amount of interests that you have while you're here on the Earth. You're allowed to be a different person from who you were 20 years ago.

Follow your motivations. Do that...
